How the discourse on special status is devoid of facts to make finance commission a scapegoat for lack of political commitment to live up to the promises made in the run-up to the elections
The BJP led central government is often quoting 14th Finance Commission to deny special status to Andhra Pradesh. A section of media commentators have been questioning the demand for special status as unconstitutional and unrealistic. But, such an argument is fallacious as classification of states into general and special categories is nothing to do with the constitution as it is a result of an executive order. Even the member of the finance commission wrote recently that blaming finance commission to deny special status to Andhra Pradesh is wrong. The finance commission was never asked to deliberate on this issue. And therefore recommendation to this effect does not arise. It is wrong to call the demand of Andhra Pradesh as unrealistic because the bifurcation of the state against the wishes of the people of Seemandhra region who now constitute residuary state of Andhra Pradesh was predicated upon the promise of special status.
